The Games are back, and this year they’re bringing the heat to Albany, New York. With the entire CrossFit world watching closely after last year’s tragic event in Texas, 2025 could be a pivotal moment in the sport’s evolution. CrossFit HQ must be hoping that this year's competition will bring an unforgettable spectacle and renew faith and trust in the organisation.
From Fort Worth to Albany: A New Chapter Begins
Last year’s Games in Fort Worth, Texas, marked a significant shift in the competition’s legacy, but not without controversy. The tragic death of athlete Lazar Đukić during the swim-run event cast a long shadow over the event. It forced the CrossFit community to re-evaluate not just safety protocols, but the heart and soul of the sport itself.
This year, Albany steps up. It’s not just a change of scenery. It could be a fresh start.

Albany isn’t the obvious choice, but that’s part of the intrigue. It’s the first time the CrossFit Games have been hosted on the East Coast, and it places the spotlight firmly on the Northeast’s passionate affiliate network. The venue is accessible, urban, and ready to support CrossFit’s growing global audience. It's also close to major transport links, making it far easier for international athletes and fans to attend.
The CrossFit Games are recognised globally as the ultimate test of fitness, crowning the Fittest Man and Fittest Woman on Earth™. At each Games, athletes face a series of challenges revealed only moments before they compete, creating an intense and unpredictable contest that showcases exceptional training and adaptability.
For 18 years, fans worldwide have flocked to this multi-day event, watched live streams online, or tuned in via ESPN, CBS, and numerous international broadcasters. Athletes from more than 120 countries have taken part, underscoring the truly global nature of the competition.
Scoring
Athletes are awarded points for each event based on a points table. Better performance equates to more points and at the end of the competition, the athletes with the most points in their category win the competition.
No cuts!
Based on the latest information, it appears that there will be no cuts at the Games this year: Dave Castro, CrossFit’s Director of Sport, stated that with the reduced fields — just 30 men, 30 women, and 20 teams — the programming is more flexible. "This isn’t an official statement, but this will probably be the case. We are not going to have cuts at the Games this year," he said in his “Week in Review” on 28 April 2025
For context, the 2025 Games will feature smaller fields compared to previous years — reduced from 40 to 30 athletes in both the men's and women's divisions, and from 30 to 20 teams.
There is only room for 30 men, 30 women, and 20 teams to qualify.
One of the most talked-about additions? A free, open-to-all event on Day One at Jennings Landing along the Hudson River. Yes: real spectators, real workouts, and the chance to throw down with (or at least next to) some of the fittest humans alive. It’s a return to CrossFit’s grassroots ethos: fitness for all, not just the elite few.
Running 30–31 July, just before the Games kick off, this affiliate-focused event offers gym owners, coaches, and programming heads the chance to connect, learn, and lead. Expect workshops, panels, sneak peeks, and high-level coaching insights directly from CrossFit HQ.
The tragic death of Lazar Đukić during the 2024 CrossFit Games prompted serious questions across the entire CrossFit community. In response, the Professional Fitness Athletes’ Association (PFAA) called for an independent safety review, greater transparency, and long-term protections for competitors.
CrossFit HQ acknowledged these concerns by forming a Safety Advisory Council and an Athlete Advisory Council. These steps are intended to improve risk management, athlete communication, and decision-making during high-stakes events. With Albany marking the first Games since these changes, 2025 will be a key moment for restoring trust in the competition’s leadership and safety protocols.

Affiliate teams secured their spots at the 2025 CrossFit Games via the Team In-Affiliate Semifinals, held from 24 to 27 April. After the competition, the top 20 teams worldwide earned their places in Albany, where they will compete for the Affiliate Cup.
